This episode we are going to do something a little different. Instead of actually cooking something for you, we are going to show you a few different ways to cut a pineapple. I know it sounds like an easy task, but it can actually be very challenging. The simple pineapple is a common cooking ingredient in many parts of the world. However, very few people I come across use fresh pineapple. Most people I see using pineapple in their recipes are using pineapple from a can. While canned pineapple is convenient to use, it unfortunately lacks the explosive fruity flavor of "fresh pineapple". So when I asked a few people why they use canned pineapple instead of fresh, the answer was always the same. It seemed that very few people I asked have actually cut a pineapple before. Let's change that! Fresh pineapple tastes GREAT!
Pineapples are a tough fruit, but using a sharp knife can make cutting a pineapple very easy. The first thing you want to do is cut both the top and bottom off. Next, peel the skin away by using thin downward slices. You will notice that there are little hard spots on the peeled pineapple. These are the "eyes", and they will need to be removed before you can eat your pineapple. In the pictures below, I will show you two quick and easy ways to remove the eyes. Watch the video above for a third, and even easier, way to remove them. Hint, if you have ever cut the eye out of a potato, then this will be similar.
Once your pineapple is peeled, the next thing you will want to do is remove the eyes. The pineapple eyes are hard and need to be cut out in order to eat the pineapple. To remove the eyes, simply use small "v-wedge" cuts on each eye. Work your way all around the pineapple until all of the eyes are removed. lastly, trim away any unwanted parts. You will be left with a nice spiral pineapple which you can further cut as needed to fit the shape and size you need for your dish.
The second method for removing the eyes out of a pineapple is similar to the first method. Peel the pineapple as shown above. Once peeled, cut the pineapple in half and lay it down on your cutting board with the eyes facing up. Cut the eyes out in long rows. Again, trim away any unwanted parts, and you're ready to use "fresh" pineapple in your recipes.
Here are some pictures of the end result. There are three different cuts shown here for you. But there are even more ways to cut a pineapple. Just remember, the #1 Rule to cutting a pineapple, remove the eyes. Everything after that is easy.
Cooking Note: Pineapples are a popular cooking ingredient in all types of food. You can use fresh pineapple in anything from traditional kabobs, stir fries, and fried rice, to salsas and jams. Pineapple is even a popular pizza topping. Using fresh pineapple instead of canned pineapple can make a big difference for your recipes. Don't forget to use a sharp knife.
